LDS and Mormon Blogs, v2.0b, (very b)

Danithew (author of the best LDS blog that no longer is) was good enough to email me and let me know that Wednesday was the first anniversary of our collective moniker, “The Bloggernacle.” I have to confess it took me a while to warm up to the name but it has stuck and rightfully so. So happy birthday Bloggernacle! Danithew also suggests that March 23 forever be enshrined as Bloggernacle Day. We’ll have to see who remembers next year. . .

But this gives me the occasion to unveil the rudimentary beginnings of a new and improved Bloggernacle index which will be be found at

http://www.mormon-blogs.com/

The biggest improvement I hope to bring is a detailed categorized index of all the LDS blogs and Mormon bloggers based on content. This is intended to make the index more useful, accessible, and navigable. I have made a very preliminary attempt to make some subcategories (not even that yet – see UPDATE below) and I was not going to announce the new index until it was further developed, but I realize that I could use some help.

I would especially appreciate any help on:

  • what categories should be used
  • whether blogs should be listed under multiple categories, or if that would be too confusing.
  • most importantly, how you would like your blog to be categorized.
  • any other tips or suggestions would be most welcome.
  • and, any tips on how to pass the Patent Bar :-)

(Note, I created the category “Bloggernacle Choirs” to represent the must read group blogs (regardless of whatever large retail chains they may represent) that cover wide-ranging subjects and defy categorization. Other single-author blogs may similarly defy categorization – should a blog fall under multiple categories or should an all-purpose category be used?)

It would be especially helpful to trackback or pass this post on to others so I can at least get author’s opinions on how to categorize their own blogs. Ultimately, I hope to get some consensus on how the index should look.

Thank you to all who have helped me make the index so far, for all the updates, submissions, and messages of support.

UPDATE: I had hoped to have had a preliminary index listing on the main page (right now there is a cursory listing in the right column). However, I am having difficulty figuring out how to do it since Movable Type does not support “true” subcategories. It is getting to crunch time for the Patent Bar so I don’t know how much I will be able to do for the next three weeks. But i would appreciate any input on how to categorize the blogs.

Wow, that was a very nice comment to make about the now defunct Wump Blog. Thanks!

I too was surprised that it’s only been a year since we started using the term “Bloggernacle” to describe the Mormon blogosphere. Adopting a common name for the community is a significant event so I hope it can be remembered.

Way cool Dave! Yours was my first bloggernacle bookmark. And now you’ve come up with this great listing!

List my blog under the title: Culiblogs

You could also have bloggernaccers for religion only.

    Then Poliblogs: for politicers

    Craftiblogs – crafters

    Mommyblogs – obvious

    busibloggers – business related

It would however, be difficult to categorize people in different categories. Let the blogger decide and leave it at that. This could turn into full time employment for you if not!

    Great idea!

I’ll add this to the MA Zietgiest ASAP.

    Great Work!

…although isn’t LDS and Mormon blogs redundant?

And yeah, hook me up with a seat in the choir, eh.

I don’t see any reason why a blog can’t be more than one thing. Until such time as my ambition, my will power, and my self-discipline get into one room together and sort things out, Eleventh in Line will continue to be the spot I talk about myself, my life, Star Wars, politics, the church, etc. I mean, I post book reviews as often as I whine about my job — which happens about as frequently as I mull over something for my CTR7 class. And every eighth post is pretty much a message to one of my parents or friends, disguised as writing fit for the general public.

This results in a blog that is hard to categorize. Unless you have an “insane YSA girls with callings in Primary” category, which I think I fit into clearly.

There are many topics I blog about, but one particular one that I tend to soapbox on more often than not.

So, would I put myself in more than one category? Possibly, but I would tend toward one in music most likely.

Currently, I think MoBoy would do best under “Culture”, and Sohoman would do best under “Business”

Another suggestion for subcategories where none are allowed, is that they might be expressed in the name. For example: To create subcultures under “Culture”, merely name the main category “Culture-Music” and “Culture-Current Events”, etc…

Thanks for everyone’s comments and sugestions. There will have to be a catch-all category for blogs that don’t have a narrow scope.

J., LDS and Mormon are of course redundant but not to those who are not in the know. Plus, I use the term “LDS Blogs” to describe blogs that deal with church issues, while “Mormon bloggers” can be bloggers who just happen to be LDS but you might never know it from their posts.
    Thanks again for the feedback.

Several of the links are incorrect, example: http://www.mormon-blogs.com/%3Cp%3Ehttp://www.theborens.com/craiger/%3C/p%3E should be http://www.theborens.com/craiger/ and it would be nice if you fixed them, thanks.
