Romney as VP is “Deal Breaker”

A group of social conservatives is running an open letter warning John McCain that picking Mitt Romney as his Vice-President will be a “deal breaker.” The ads are being placed in cities where McCain is campaigning.

What makes this strange is that the most prominent conservative on the letter is Paul Weyrich, who endorsed Romney during the primaries. Even more odd is that the letter’s two big claims against Romney are his record on abortions and same-sex marriage. While Romney’s record on abortion is arguable his stand against SSM was pretty clear (My Mann Mitt provides links refuting both claims).

As Hot Air asks, “What’s this really about?” Evangelicals for Mitt thinks the targeting of Romney with the rise of Huckabee show “the need for a serious reformation of our movement.”

UPDATE: The group has an online petition you can sign at NoMittVP.com. There is a checkbox you can click that says “I would vote for McCain/Romney.” Some of the later names on the petition are checking that option (cough).

Marc Ambinder points out while the the petition asks that McCain choose someone who supports a Federal Marriage Amendment, McCain doesn’t while Romney does.

The only thing that Orin Hatch and I agree on is that Paul Weyrich is crazy. It seemed pretty obvious to me that Weyrich and others were supporting Mitt to block McCain and not because they thought highly of Romney. Mitt is a moderate conservative (though very much a conservative).

I interned under Peter LaBarbera (one of the people on the list) when I was at AIM. He is primarily an ant-gay rights activist. These people are extremists. General election time is when you need to move away from these people anyways.

I highly doubt that he will pick Mitt, though Mitt seems to be positioning for it. I do not see what he brings to the table in November. Unless people really think that being rich translate to an understanding of political economy.

I doubt he’ll pick Romney as well. Romney’s just playing the good guy with hopes of 2012. I doubt he thinks he’s a serious pick for Veep. I think McCain should consider him for a cabinent seat.

    Don’t you? ;-)

If this groups efforts truly had the Party/Country’s efforts at heart they would simply call Senator McCain and tell them what they think.

No it is not principle that drives this group, but the fact that Mormons are converting much of their flock.

McCain does not support a marriage ammendment. Was their comment meant to weaken the party nominee? I’m sure we’ll soon be hearing that Romney was really behind this Ad. He wanted to seem a victim right?

McCain would WANT someone who AGREES with his position (if the ads allegations are correct- that there should not be a marriage amendment) but who also has the conservatives pundents rooting for him.

If they wanted to discourage McCain wouldn’t they have emphasised – hey this Guy’s position on the Marriage Amendment is Vastlydifferent from your own.

And the continued fighting between Clinton and Obama is supposed to be damaging for the Democratic Party? Not so much, maybe.

The thing that amazes me is that they’re doing this despite having nowhere to go. I mean, maybe they’ll vote for Bob Barr? Allow me to laugh.

That and McCain is supposed to be happy with raising $14 million in March.

Bob Barr and the above bunch of yahoos are just seeking some free publicity.
