Afternoon church is rough

Having just moved to a ward with the 1 – 4 pm block schedule, I think this just about nails it:

I’m not afraid to admit it. Sunday mornings are frankly painful at my house. We are on the dreaded 1-4 church schedule which means that we spend about 7 solid hours getting ready for church, still panic during the last twenty minutes and inevitably find at least one child shoeless after we’ve settled into a pew. I actually prefer the 9-12 slot; we jump out of bed and race to church– just like ripping off a bandaid.

What’s worse, is that our sacrament meeting is last (which has always seemed weird to me) and the children and READY to go home by the time the last speaker starts. And of course, we then go home, have dinner, and go to bed. We were spoiled in Maryland with a ward that is eternally set with church at 9 am – noon.

You wouldn’t have liked the time slot we had when we had 6 wards in our building while another building was being renovated. We met 3-6.

Since i have had Sunday morning meetings nearly our entire married life, we are always up early and never need to rush.

10-1 is always, always the best slot. (10:20-1:30 is a close second.) Unfortunately, the usual time slots seem to always be 9-12, 11-2, and 1-4.

And 11-2 is the worst of all.

Of course, one ward i was in in Maryland was in a building with 5 units, so one January we went from 2-5 to 8-11. Yes, that’s right, bad to worse.

I still think (as i zip up my asbestos suit) that the easiest way around this would be to admit that Sunday School really doesn’t add much that PH/RS/YM/YW doesn’t, strike that hour, and move forward from there.

    Kim –

3-6 pretty much has to be the worst ever. Can they go any later than that?

10-2 sure sounds nice. I’ve never come across it thought. Just the standard blocks you mention.

Fortunately, it appears that in additon to building more temples, the church has had a building boom in general and there aren’t that many units crammed in the same building anymore.

Although I can’t argue you with you too much about Sunday School (unfortunately the whole hour just depends on the quality of the teacher), the cranky conservative in me would be sad to see SS cut and the block go to two hours. I don’t see it happening.
