One more reason to love Jimmy Stewart: The DesNews looks at some Hollywood-Utah connections from Robert Redford to Fay Wray (my grandma’s cousin, thank you very much).

But I was most interested that the connection with the Church and Jimmy Stewart went beyond just Mr. Krueger’s Christmas.

James Maitland Stewart, better known as Jimmy Stewart, had close associations with Utah, visiting the state several times and starring in a 1980 TV film that has become a Christmas treat for many, “Mr. Krueger’s Christmas,” produced for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Years later he told a Deseret News reporter the film allowed him to fulfill a lifelong dream, conducting the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

In 1985, the star of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “Harvey,” “Vertigo,” “Rear Window” and a slew of other productions, donated his papers and memorabilia to Brigham Young University. Covering half a century of his work, this treasure included prints of 25 films.

For the record. Tom Hanks apologizes:

Last week, I labeled members of the Mormon church who supported California’s Proposition 8 as “un-American.” I believe Proposition 8 is counter to the promise of our Constitution; it is codified discrimination. But everyone has a right to vote their conscience – nothing could be more American. To say members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who contributed to Proposition 8 are “un-American” creates more division when the time calls for respectful disagreement. No one should use “un- American” lightly or in haste. I did. I should not have.

Sincerely,
Tom Hanks.

LDS Church sends aid to Palestinians in Gaza Strip:

The LDS Church, working through an American charity, donated hygiene kits and blankets worth $21,000 to Palestinians suffering the effects of the 22-day war between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

The donation by Latter-day Saint Charities was clearly a sensitive one, acknowledged in a single- sentence statement by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Thursday.

“In response to the America Near East Refugee organization (ANERA), the Church made a modest donation of hygiene kits and blankets that will be distributed in Gaza,” the statement said.

This should please the gang at The Mormon Worker.

Dr. Dobson and Glenn Beck seem to have buried the hatchet. Last month, Dobson’s Focus on the Family yanked its interview with Beck to spare its listeners any impression that it was signaling a “theological compromise” with Mormons. Heaven forbid.

That seems to have played itself out as Beck is returning the favor and hosting Dr. Dobson on his own show tomorrow to discuss the 20th anniversary of Dobson’s interview with Ted Bundy and the role pornography played in his crimes.

Hopefully, Dobson will have the good sense to not mention that Bundy was a one-time Mormon (granted, it was when he was on the prowl in Utah and probably joined just to get along).

Today is being celebrated and mourned as the 36th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which made abortion on demand a constitutional right.

Perhaps I have been reading too much of the bloggernacle, but I was surprised to see how strongly Mormons as a whole oppose abortion. According to a Pew Forum study, Mormons as a religion as are the second most likely to oppose abortion. The survey breaks down views on abortion by degree of support or opposition and by religion. Mormons as a whole, were second only to Jehovah’s Witnesses (?) to oppose abortion in most or all cases, even more so than Evangelicals

Abortion Views by Religious Affiliation

However, it’s worth noting that compared to other religions who generally oppose abortion, Mormons are dispproportinately less likely to believe it should be illegal in all cases and more likely to believe that abortion should be illegal only in most cases. That seems in line with what the Church counsels.

Some members have expressed that the the Church is essentially “pro-choice” because its allows some exceptions for abortion. But those exceptions are only in rare circumstances and even then abortion should not be considered lightly. That doesn’t seem to be in line with today’s “pro-choice” view that abortion should be unrestricted and even government funded .

Elder Russell M. Nelson reiterated the LDS Church’s strong opposition to abortion a few months ago in the Ensign:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has consistently opposed the practice of abortion. More than a century ago, the First Presidency wrote, “We again take this opportunity of warning the Latter-day Saints against those … practices of foeticide and infanticide.”

Early in his presidency President Spencer W. Kimball (1895–1985) said: “We have repeatedly affirmed the position of the Church in unalterably opposing all abortions, except in two rare instances: When conception is the result of forcible rape and when competent medical counsel indicates that a mother’s health would otherwise be seriously jeopardized.” Current policy now includes two other exceptions—incest and if the baby cannot survive beyond birth, as determined by competent medical counsel. Even these exceptions do not justify abortion automatically. It “should be considered only after the persons responsible have consulted with their bishops and received divine confirmation through prayer.”

The presidential swearing-in, a secular ordinance just like baptism: To be sure it sticks, Chief Justice Roberts swore in President Obama again out of “an abundance of caution.”

After the flub heard around the world, President Barack Obama has taken the oath of office. Again. Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the oath to Obama on Wednesday night at the White House – a rare do-over. The surprise moment came in response to Tuesday’s much-noticed stumble, when Roberts got the words of the oath a little off, which prompted Obama to do so, too.

Don’t worry, the White House says: Obama has still been president since noon on Inauguration Day.

But they didn’t to let conspiracy-mongers go away completely empty-handed:

The president said he did not have his Bible with him, but that the oath was binding anyway.

Pray for the President’s Success

President Uchtdorf and Elder Ballard reported on their inauguration experience yesterday:

“We could feel the deep emotion around us — we were surrounded by people of all colors, of all creeds and of all languages,” said President Uchtdorf . . . “It was a great experience we had — to see a unity there that I hope will last on and continue throughout the years of this administration.”

and

“I left with a feeling that the people of America are going to unite behind this new president and his administration and that we need to pray for him,” Elder Ballard said. “We need to exercise our prayers and help him accomplish the great objectives that he has set.”

Helpful counsel to encourage all of us to support our new president. After all, we are supposed to honor our rulers.

I don’t think they mean we are supposed to necessarily sign on to the specifics of President Obama’s agenda but his overall efforts to strengthen our nation.

Some encouragement for those of us who didn’t vote for him: the Barack Obama who spoke yesterday sounded a lot different from the one of last year’s primary campaign. Plus, we have an opportunity to not return in kind the derangement syndrome that afflicted many of our fellow citizens for the past eight years.

As my father-in-law wrote in an op-ed this Sunday:

At this point let’s give Obama the benefit of the doubt. After all, his success will be our success.

I agree. I’m sure there will be plenty of issues to disagree and argue over but he is our president. We should hope at the least that he is successful in running and defending our country.

If you need more specifics on how the loyal opposition should behave (or anyone else for that matter), consult this excellent “To Don’t” list for the right.

Kathleen Flake on Rev. Lowery’s benediction:

This inauguration for many was an event in which an extraordinary oneness was experienced; a oneness demanded by the extraordinary man we chose to lead us. That was what Rev. Lowery was asked to bless or empower for future attempts. In the end, he could not do it. In the last moments, elbows splayed, he grabbed the ball from the air and with a resounding crash on the boards he told us our divisions are greater than our unity. Rev. Lowery last words for the day divided us into races again and in racist terms.
