KSL News: Mormon church issues statement in support of gay-rights ordinances.
At Tuesday night’s Salt Lake City Council meeting, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a statement showing it’s support of the city’s proposed non-discrimination regulations . . .
Tuesday’s statement to the city council comes in response to public comment on two proposed anti-discrimination ordinances that would enact two new chapters in the Salt Lake City Code.
The ordinances, one dealing with employment, the other with housing, stem from a report released in July by Mayor Becker and the City’s Human Rights Commission, which found a number of discrimination cases throughout Salt Lake.

Nice.

A transparent ploy designed only to blunt criticism of the Mormon Church. Who cares? The Mormon Church was and is the most well financed and dedicated enemy homosexual Americans have. The Mormons threw us a bone–I say throw it back. It means nothing substantive.

I don’t know if Mormons are that “dedicated” to being enemies of homosexuals. Having been a member all my life there has been an appalling lack of interest in being an enemy of homosexuals. For a people who have tons of meetings and discussions and programs on accomplishing various goals, oppressing someone for SSA has never been on the radar. The number of times same-sex attraction has been addressed in any meeting I’ve attended: 0. I’m not kidding. There was an article about it in the Ensign a few years ago and I was really shocked. (It was nicely done, as usual.)
But you are right about the legislation–it means nothing substantive either way.

Millions of dollars and intense organized activity in multiple states to fight equal protection under the law for homosexuals is real dedication. Major support of the Mormon Church in the Supreme Court in BSA vs Dale to insure that homosexuals are excluded from the BSA both as members and leaders doesn’t ring a bell? Perhaps you are not sensitive to it because it doesn’t impact you or anyone you know, or perhaps you think ‘those people’ are deviants who don’t deserve equality anyway. I don’t know. Perhaps you are not familiar with electric aversion therapy done on homosexuals at BYU and by LDS Social Services? I have a hard time imagining any Mormon ever thinking at all about how these things impact homosexuals, because to you, beyond some platitudes about ‘loving everyone’ homosexuals are not equal to you and not deserving of what you have including basic protection under the law.
