Most Christians say Mormons are Christians (barely)

Glenn Beck wasn’t entirely correct when he said this weekend that most Christians don’t consider Mormons as Christians too. I would have said the same thing but this Pew Survey from 2007 claims that 52% of surveyed Catholics/Protestants/Unaffiliated Christians consider Mormons to be Christian.

It would be incorrect to state that “most” Christians do not view Mormonism as a Christian religion. A 2007 survey by the Pew Research Center reported that a majority of Catholics (52%) say that Mormons are Christian; 29% say they are not. Among all Protestants, more say Mormonism is a Christian religion than say it is not by a 49%-to-34% margin. This includes 62% of white mainline Protestants who say Mormons are Christians.

But a significant majority in each grouping still thinks we’re “very different.” I prefer “peculiar” but I can live with that.

This reminds me of a conversation I had back in college (in Jacksonville, FL). I don’t remember the specific topic, but after I made a comment one of my baptist friends said “Wow! You almost sound like a Christian!”

The funny thing was that she was being absolutely sincere!

I’ve found recently that not only are Christians starting to admit that Mormons are Christians, but they are starting to warm up to the Book of Mormon.

Check out one of my recent posts and in the comments read what one pastor and another member of a different Christian group say about the Book of Mormon. It’s actually pretty amazing, I thought.

    ama –

Hopefully you’re right. I don’t imagine things will change overnight but it would be nice to see some grudging acceptance that while Mormons may not be Orthodox, we are indeed Christians, in word and deed. I suppose its too much to ask but it would be nice if they could get over their hangups over the creeds and recognize that they aren’t required to be officially Christian.

david – I have had similar experiences too. Sadly.
