Nuts. Although most of them drive me crazy with their biases, I still would like newspapers to survive. I’m not sure charging for content is the way to go. The Salt Lake Tribune is going to start charging fees next year. And apparently many more newspapers will be doing the same in the next three months. Perhaps the only way it will work is if they all do it once.

LDS Newsroom launches the Newsroom Blog. I always thought the Newsroom site had become more and more “bloggy.” It will be interesting to see what a real blog will be like.

You may notice a different, more conversational tone on this blog than you would see in official news releases on the Newsroom Web site. This blog will be managed and written by staff of the Public Affairs Department of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The information here will be reliable and accurate but should not necessarily be viewed as official statements from the Church. The purpose of this blog is to provide journalists, bloggers and the public with additional context and information regarding public issues and news stories involving the Church.

Every thought of starting your own church blog or website but didn’t know where to start? Do you already blog but thought about doing a site devoted to the Gospel? Is one more church website never enough for you?

The More Good Foundation has launched an initiative inviting faithful members who are interested in adopting a website URL. The goal is to share positive content about the Church and who we are as members. Visit SiteAdopt.org for more details.

You can adopt one of our existing websites in an area of your interest and we will train you on how to ‘care for, grow, and nurture the site’–it can be your own or a group’s ‘pet project’ so-to-speak. We’ll show you how to upload content, photos, videos, posts, if you don’t already know how to do those things. You don’t have to create the design or template, or host the site. We do that. You do not even know how to operate a site or upload content. We can show you that too. You do need to know how to type and have an interest in a particular topic that you would like to have shared online as a Mormon, and have a desire to add positive content to the Internet without being preachy or discussing only doctrinal things.

If this sounds like a good idea, you can adopt a site (of course as with any proper adoption you will need to apply and fill out a consent form) and they will help you on your way.

Awesome, Mormon Channel radio launches today. The “official radio station of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints” is internet based but will be available via HDRadio where Bonneville radio stations are plus via a soon to be released iPhone app.

The Mormon Channel is the official radio station of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The channel originates from Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah and broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Content for the station comes from the vast archives of the Church, along with several new series created specifically for this station. The Mormon Channel also features great programming from various partner organizations, including Deseret Book, Bonneville, the Deseret News, LDS Business College, and the campuses of Brigham Young University.

The daily schedule only lists the current day so far but has a lot of programming crammed in. There are eight podcasts available

Although I like all the new media that has developed thanks to the internet, I have always loved radio. It’s nice to see that the Church is showing a renewed interest in a global radio station and embracing a new generation of technology to distribute it. This seems like a quick turnaround from Church Audio Content Survey it had just last month.

More at the LDS Newsroom, explaining some of the shows that will be broadcast.

Changes and lay offs coming to the Deseret News. The industry-wide slump in circulation and ad revenue hits the DN. It sounds like an increased online LDS presence (i.e. Mormon Times) is part of their future strategy.

A committee, comprised mostly of editors, will begin immediately looking at where those cuts will be made. The paper has about 200 full-time employees.

At the same time, the newspaper will be restructured in an effort to appeal to local readers as well as a worldwide audience, particularly members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who make up the vast majority of the newspaper’s readership. The LDS Church owns the Deseret News.

Cannon described it as a 24-hour news source via words and multimedia that is “more local, more online, more Mormon.”

You can now sign up for the Newsroom.lds.org mailing list (bottom of the lefthand menu).

You can pick to get email updates for all new content or pick among news releases and stories, commentaries, video, photos, audio, public issues statements, and stories from the news media.

This feature appears to be especially targeted to involve bloggers. While not required, the submission form allows you to submit your blog address.

At BYU-I graduation, Elder Ballard renews call to participate in new media:

With all the falsehoods and misconceptions about the Church found online, Elder Ballard urged the graduates to use their knowledge and testimony of the gospel to influence seekers of truth. “Today I want to encourage you to reach out to others in the world to help change the perception and even the hearts of millions of our Heavenly Father’s children by correcting misunderstandings by sharing with them the message of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ,” he said.

Elder Ballard suggested that graduates join in conversations on the Internet to share the gospel and to explain the message of the Restoration in simple, clear terms. As they participate in these new media, Elder Ballard continued, the graduates should remember first and foremost that they are followers of the Savior Jesus Christ.
